SuperNode has issued a detailed response to the EU Action Plan for Grids, which was published by the EU Commission on 28 November 2023.
John Fitzgerald, CEO of SuperNode, welcomed the plan stating that “The publication of the EU Action Plan for Grids is a positive step forward. There is recognition of the need for growth in cross-border grids, which we will need to enable the transfer of huge amounts of new green renewable energy across Europe. It is welcome to see new technologies mentioned, particularly the use of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) cables. SuperNode is to the forefront in developing next generation superconducting cables capable of delivering up to 10 GWs of power across hundreds of kilometres.”
“While the Action Plan is broadly positive, we would like to see some gaps addressed in futures strategies. Existing grid technology is not fit for purpose to meet future requirements and the need for grid technology innovation should be explicitly stated as a challenge in its own right. Related to this, we recommend that the Commission’s future strategy on grids include a streamlining of the access to funding under the EU Innovation Fund for enabling technologies such as innovative grid technology.”
