SuperNode highlighted as government announces Irish membership of CERN

On the occasion of Ireland officially joining the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) as an Associate Member State, SuperNode’s cooperation with CERN was highlighted as a case study by the Irish government in its announcement.

Over the past two years, SuperNode and CERN have collaborated to develop a novel cryostat for superconducting electricity transmission cables, drawing upon CERN’s expertise in vacuum and materials science.

Announcing that Ireland joins CERN, Tánaiste Simon Harris said: “CERN is a highly prestigious international organisation and associate membership will offer Ireland significant opportunities going forward.”

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless said: “Today, we open the door to world-class opportunities for Irish researchers, students and enterprises. Ireland is now part of a scientific ecosystem that shapes the future. We are not just joining CERN. We are stepping onto the world stage of discovery.”

CERN and SuperNode have collaborated for more than two years through the CERN Innovation Programme on Environmental Applications (CIPEA).

SuperNode CEO, John Fitzgerald said: “Congratulations to Ireland and to CERN. As part of our cooperation, SuperNode engineers have been working side by side with CERN teams in Geneva. It’s a world class institution and I am thrilled that Irish researchers, scientists and companies now gain direct access to one of the world’s leading institutions for turning knowledge and teamwork into groundbreaking technologies.”

CERN and SuperNode have cooperated on designing and developing state-of-the-art test rigs to inform and validate SuperNode’s cryostat technology and prototypes. The latest rig was recently delivered to SuperNode’s facility, the European Cryogenic Centre for Superconductors, in Dublin.
