ENTSO-E must embrace holistic collaboration to include all key stakeholders.
SuperNode submitted its response to ENTSO-E’s consultation: RDI Implementation Report 2021-2025. The report will be the guiding instrument for the collaborative research programme of TSOs over the next 5 years.
SuperNode believes ENTSO-E’s approach is well suited to enabling effective collaboration between the European TSOs, which should provide a solid foundation for research on the European-wide energy system of the future. However, this is too narrow a focus as any approach focused on European-wide research of the electricity grid must not exclude the valuable input from key stakeholders in the private sector and research institutions.

SuperNode finds that ENTSO-E’s implementation programme contains too little recognition of the need for innovation in grid technology beyond HVDC. There are huge advancements being made in the industry, in grid enhancing technologies and transmission technology based on high temperature superconductors. Many of which can be found referenced in ENTSO-E’s own Technopedia.
“The current point-to-point approach to offshore infrastructure based on HVDC technology will not deliver the green deal. Innovation is essential to the necessary upgrading and modernisation of network technology. Advancements to grid enhancing technologies and cable technology based on high temperature superconductors have the potential to unlock huge efficiency gains at a system level,” added Christian Kjaer
