SuperNode has provided feedback on the German Federal Network Agency’s draft Grid Development Plan (FEP) and associated environmental reports for the North Sea and Baltic Sea. While supporting Germany’s target of 70 GW offshore wind capacity by 2045, SuperNode has raised concerns about specific elements of the plan.
The company is particularly concerned about proposed reductions in required spacing between cables. Reducing the space requirements for cables could negatively impact marine life. Instead, SuperNode advocates for superconducting cables, which do not emit heat, can carry more capacity in a single cable, and can be installed at closer proximity, thereby minimising environmental impact and optimising space.
John Fitzgerald, CEO of SuperNode, said: “The next generation of superconducting land and submarine cables will be ready for the market before the end of this decade. This is within the timeframe quoted for conventional submarine cables.”
Aligned with the EU’s “Energy Efficiency First” principle, SuperNode highlights that superconducting cables are more energy-efficient, with high transmission capacity, reduced space needs, and lower material use compared to traditional cables. The company calls for more development and pilot projects to advance these technologies, ensuring they meet EU efficiency goals and support sustainable grid expansion.
The company also argues that suspending environmental impact assessments (EIAs) will not resolve issues related to production capacity and supply chain delays. Maintaining EIAs while focusing on innovative technologies like superconductors is crucial for balancing environmental protection with infrastructure expansion.
