Listen to SuperNode CEO on the Redefining Energy Tech Podcast

SuperNode CEO John Fitzgerald recently joined Michael Barnard on the Redefining Energy Tech podcast for an insightful two-part discussion about the future of energy transmission and the transformative potential of superconducting cable technology.

🎧 Listen to Part 1 and Part 2.

In Part 1, John shares insights from his journey in energy, from leading the East-West Interconnector project to advancing SuperNode’s superconducting cable technologies. John and Michael discuss the role of superconducting cable technologies in a power market where grid connection costs and planning delays are becoming an increasingly significant part of project expenses and constraints on delivering value for customers, consumers, and countries.

“SuperNode didn’t invent superconductivity. We saw a problem and explored how we could help scale and accelerate the deployment of transmission grids.”

In Part 2, John and Michael delve into the revolutionary potential of superconducting cables for both urban and continental energy systems. John highlights how SuperNode is advancing cryogenic systems, including the development of smooth bore cryostats. These innovations enable cables to run three times longer between cooling stations, significantly reducing infrastructure requirements while enhancing efficiency and scalability.

He also emphasises the importance of developing a European super grid and investing in high-capacity power corridors to support renewable energy integration and minimise curtailment. John urges policymakers, utilities, and system operators to bridge gaps in energy infrastructure, foster partnerships, and secure funding to accelerate the rollout of innovative transmission solutions for a sustainable future.
