“A supergrid will not only unlock access to renewable energy, but also ensure a more secure and stable energy supply across the continent.” This was the key message from Belgian Energy Minister, Tinne Van der Straeten at the Brussels launch of the new edition of Supergrid Super Solution: A Handbook for Energy Independence and a Europe Free from Fossil Fuels.
Co-authored by the late Eddie O’Connor and Kevin O’Sullivan, Environment and Science Editor of The Irish Times, ‘Supergrid – Super Solution’ presents a roadmap for transitioning from fossil fuels to a zero-carbon economy amid the energy crisis. This book demonstrates the essential role of a European supergrid to efficiently transmit vast amounts of cost-competitive, regionally produced energy to where it’s most urgently needed.
Minister Van der Straeten continued: “The concept of a European supergrid comes at a decisive moment for Europe’s energy future. It was a central theme during the Belgian Presidency of the EU, where we emphasised the importance of building an interconnected and resilient energy network… This vision is in line with Europe’s ambition to lead the green energy transition and deliver affordable, clean energy to all its citizens. [This book] is not only timely, but essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the future of Europe’s energy landscape.”
Barry Andrews MEP noted that the book contains “an idea, a vision, a European solution to an international issue”. He continued, “Despite setbacks and a complicated political situation, recent Commission communications indicate real ambition for investment in cross border grid infrastructure.”
Lesley O’Connor introduced the book: “The Supergrid will be the internet for electrons. It’s the critical infrastructure needed to deliver a fully electrified, decarbonised future, at lowest cost and highest speed… If that’s the future you desire for yourself and your kids, it’s time to start making it a reality. This book shows us how.”
Co-author Kevin O’Sullivan added: “If the Supergrid concept is adopted and pursued in Europe and across other continents, it will help accelerate global decarbonisation and be the platform to deliver cheap, clean energy for all global citizens and ease geopolitical tensions, conflict and climate-driven migration.”
As Europe navigates the complex landscape of energy security and competitiveness challenges following the Ukrainian invasion, the release of this updated edition of Supergrid – Super Solution could not come at a better time. First outlined by Eddie O’Connor two decades ago, the need for rolling out a European Supergrid has recently been recognised as vital for energy independence, decarbonisation and competitiveness by EU Energy Ministers.
The concept of a fully interconnected, 100% renewable energy network is no longer just an idea: but a key solution for Europe’s energy future. This new edition has been thoroughly updated with international perspectives. It also reflects on the recent explosion of opportunities for key decarbonisation technologies and is structured as a hands-on guide for current energy challenges.
