Ofgem: Open letter on future reform to the electricity connections process

SuperNode has responded to Ofgem’s Open Letter on Future Reform to the Electricity Connections Process. SuperNode envisions a strategic approach to address grid connection queue delays, with a strong focus on the transformative potential of superconducting cables.

Anticipatory Investment and Long-Term Planning

SuperNode accentuates the significance of anticipatory investment and long-term strategic planning in tackling the grid connection challenges arising from the surge in renewable energy installations

Innovative Grid Technologies for Enhanced Transmission Capacity

To effectively navigate these challenges, SuperNode urges Ofgem to prioritise the exploration of innovative grid technologies capable of significantly augmenting transmission capacity. The existing transmission technology faces constraints in transferring the significant power volumes required post-2030. Superconducting cables emerge as a technology with profound potential in this context. Unlike current HVDC cables with a 2 GW bi-pole capacity limit, superconducting cables have the capacity to transmit up to 10 GW.

The capability to transmit 10 GW in a single cable corridor diminishes the number of projects required, thus alleviating pressure on connection queues. These cables exhibit greater space efficiency, necessitating smaller infrastructure components such as collector stations. This facet simplifies permitting procedures, reduces costs, and mitigates public opposition. This comprehensive approach alleviates strain on connection queues by streamlining the execution of grid projects.
