SuperNode has submitted a comprehensive response to Ofgem’s recent consultation. The response articulates a forward-looking perspective on the UK’s energy infrastructure and emphasises the significance of innovative solutions for a sustainable energy transition.
SuperNode agrees with Ofgem’s proposal to extend the system need assessment horizon to 2050. It stresses the importance of identifying the structure and needs of an optimised and decarbonised 2050 grid and working backwards from there. Short-term approaches that might hinder long-term planning and development will result in a sub-optimal system.
Furthermore, SuperNode highlights the need to incorporate environmental and community impacts into Cost-Benefit Analyses (CBA) for energy network projects. It emphasises the role of innovative technologies like superconducting cables for bulk power transmission, which drastically reduce material consumption, enhance energy efficiency, optimise transmission corridors and would reduce some of the challenges with community acceptance compared to conventional transmission technologies.
SuperNode supports Ofgem’s recommendation for the Future System Operator (FSO) to suggest additional interconnection opportunities, as part of the development of a system wide approach. SuperNode further stresses the broader benefits of a system wide approach, which the UK are now developing, which applies to a European-wide approach. Deep interconnection and participation in a pan-European energy system would foster stability, resilience, optimised renewable and transmission infrastructure and environmental impact reduction, benefitting both the UK and its European neighbours.
