SuperNode has submitted a response to the European Commission’s proposal for regulation on the Net Zero Industry Act. SuperNode’s response welcomes the new measures and the retained focus on the 8 strategic net zero technologies, proposed in Annex 1, one of which is transmission grids. However, incentive programs should be introduced and strengthened to promote and develop innovative technologies.
SuperNode’s response highlights that achieving Europe’s agreed-upon 2050 decarbonisation target, necessitates a 2040 energy system that predominantly relies on fully decarbonised electricity, primarily sourced from variable wind power and intermittent solar power. To realise such a system, SuperNode emphasises the importance of proactive planning, demonstration, and deployment of grid-enhancing technologies and advanced power cable solutions. This includes superconducting cable systems, a technology in which SuperNode specialises. These superconducting cable systems have the capacity to move substantial amounts of power with zero electrical losses and minimal use of critical raw materials.
SuperNode proposes that a new article be introduced (Article 26 (3) bis) to provide for transmission and distribution system operators to ensure that provisions are made for testing new, innovative grid technologies:
“For net-zero regulatory sandboxes established for Innovative net-zero Electricity grid technologies, Member States must ensure participation of relevant national TSOs and DSOs in overcoming any technical or administrative barriers to establishing the net-zero sandbox.”
Sandboxes will be needed to ensure that innovative technology can be demonstrated and proven. Specifically for Innovative Grid Technologies, a mechanism is needed to secure positive engagement from TSOs and DSOs. There also needs to be a transparent and non-discriminatory process whereby TSOs and DSOs are required to respond to requests for a sandbox project and engage in their successful implementation.
